NAFS
Numbered Air Forces are the echelons between MAJCOMs and wings, with operational organizations assigned to them (usually wings). As part of the restructuring that occurred after World War II and the creation of the U.S. Air Force in 1947, The 16 wartime NAFs were reduced to just 11, and assigned as follows: The Eighth and Fifteenth Air Forces were assigned to SAC; the Third, Ninth, and Twelfth Air Forces were assigned to TAC; and the First, Second, Fourth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Fourteenth Air Forces were assigned to ADC. In 1949, Second Air Force was transferred to SAC. Throughout the Cold War, numbered air forces had both operational and administrative authority, and existed as a command level between MAJCOMs and air divisions, the latter of which were eliminated during another major restructuring that took place at the end of the Cold War. Although NAFs were occasionally reassigned, their basic arrangement persisted throughout the Cold War. For most of its life, SAC had Second, Eighth, and Fifteenth Air Forces. Its successor, AFGSC, has just two NAFs: Eighth and Twentieth. So those are the NAFs to which ICBM wings were and are assigned. With the exception of the Twenty-Third Air Force, responsible for helicopters from 1983-1990, and the later-era (current) Second Air Force, under AETC since 1993, all the other NAFs in this album had responsibility for tactical missile organizations in the U.S., Europe, and the Far East.
